Individual accelerated (master's) tracks

For registered specialty physical therapists, there is the opportunity to accelerate and complete our three-year master’s degree programs with a Master of Science degree.

Training in brief

  • Target audience: physical therapists
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Variant: Part-time
  • Degree: master of science (MSc)
  • Location: Amersfoort

As a general physical therapist with a bachelor’s degree, you will complete a full three-year (master’s) program at SOMT University of Physiotherapy, which includes all coursework, tests and exams required to specialize in the physical therapy discipline of your choice.

Only with previously acquired competencies, so-called EVCs, based on recognized diplomas or courses taken or modules obtained with certificates, can you qualify for exemption from program components. This makes it possible to obtain the same Master’s degree, and thus the MSc title, in a shorter period of time. Please note that the application must be made individually and may lead to a different assessment per individual by the Examination Board.

Below we outline two possible variants, as examples:

  • An individually tailored master’s degree program for a physical therapist registered in a quality registry, without an MSc title.
  • An individually tailored pathway for a registered physical therapist in a quality registry holding a relevant MSc degree in a relevant health field.

1. Individual accelerated master's program for physical therapists without an MSc degree

You are eligible if you are registered in a Quality Sub-register as a specialist physiotherapist (Manual Physiotherapist, Pelvic Physiotherapist, Orofacial Physiotherapist, Sports Physiotherapist, Physiotherapist in Geriatrics) and have not yet obtained an MSc degree.

Because of already acquired clinical competencies and registration, you may be exempted from much of the clinically-oriented practical components of the program. You can then go through an accelerated track, focusing on acquiring the master competencies embedded in your specialization.

The first year of this individual accelerated track consists of gaining the generic master’s competencies, such as:

  • Clinical reasoning
  • Evidence-Based Practice;
    Methodology and Statistics
  • Clinimetry
  • Implement and innovate.

In addition, you will attend class days that highlight the clinical state-of-the-art in the field.

This first year prepares you optimally to enter integrally into the graduation year of the regular Master’s program. In this graduation year, the competencies learned are applied in in-depth and complex clinical contexts within the specialization. Also, the exam is taken in the form of an implementation project and a thesis research.

The pathway outlined here thus consists of two years. If you already have previously acquired competencies on the generic master competencies listed above, you may be eligible for further acceleration of the pathway. The acceleration described above may vary from one individual to another.

To obtain exemptions and thus any individual accelerated master’s program is always reviewed and assessed by the Examination Board.

2. An individually tailored track for physical therapist holding a relevant MSc title

Are you a general physical therapist and already have an MSc degree, for example in a physical therapy specialization or another relevant (university) master’s degree?

Then you may be eligible for exemptions if you wish to follow one of our (master’s) programs. For admission, obtaining exemptions and thus any individual accelerated master’s program is always reviewed and assessed by the Examination Board.

The Examination Board will weigh what experience you have gained in previous scientific research or as a professional innovator. This will include previously acquired competences such as the development of a professional implementation product, the experience gained in an MSc thesis or previously obtained professional exams such as Epidemiology and Statistics. Depending on the individual preliminary course, the Examination Board will grant exemptions.
