In the pediatric pelvic physiotherapy training program, you will acquire the competencies necessary to screen, diagnose, prognosticate and treat children (ages 3-18) with mictional defecation disorders, enuresis, urinary tract infections and abdominal pain. Pediatric pelvic physiotherapy is a special addition to the pediatric or pelvic physiotherapist degree. There is a high demand for this specific expertise in the Netherlands. The Pediatric Pelvic Physiotherapy course meets that need.
This vocational course is accredited (135 points) with the Physiotherapy Quality House for the Quality Registry:
Pediatric pelvic physiotherapists work in different fields in the Netherlands:
The training is structured in a separate preliminary course for the pediatric physiotherapists, a separate preliminary course for the pelvic physiotherapists and a joint course. The preliminary course for both consists of 4 teaching days, 3 regional days and an internship day. The preliminary course ends with a test. The joint track consists of 10 lecture days, 6 regional days, two internship days and a test day. The dates for the regional days and internship days are planned in consultation within the regional groups. The teaching days are scheduled in blocks of two days, always on a Monday and Tuesday.
This course is open only to registered pediatric and pelvic physical therapists.
You must provide the following official document with your registration:
A screenshot, Word file and/or a diploma in (pediatric) Pelvic Physical Therapy are invalid.
The Pediatric Pelvic Physiotherapy course is in application to the Physiotherapy Quality House for the SKF (Hallmark) quality register and KRF NL (KNGF) for the Pelvic Physiotherapy and Pediatric Physiotherapy registers.
The subject matter of pediatric pelvic physiotherapy training is not included in the existing training programs and the competencies are described separately in an addendum to the existing professional profiles of the pediatric and pelvic physiotherapist: Specialized physiotherapy for children with toilet training problems.
The program consists of a separate preliminary course for both specializations.
The pediatric physical therapist follows a course that highlights the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor, genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems. In addition, the basics of exercise therapy and basics of external inspection and external palpation of the pelvic floor are covered.
In the preliminary process of the pelvic physical therapist, the general and motor development and behavioral and developmental disorders of children are in the foreground. In addition, the specific problems of puberty and teenage pregnancy are addressed and extra attention is paid to the role of parents and the communication parent-child therapist focused on the pedagogical and didactic aspects in the treatment of children.
The practical lessons start from a case and thus focus on clinical reasoning in the daily practice of the pediatric pelvic physiotherapist. The case can be about clinical practice, but also about the professional attitude of the therapist. Thus, all roles of pediatric pelvic physiotherapy, as described in the addendum to the existing professional competency profile, are covered.
Learning material is provided through questioning within case histories. As a child pelvic physiotherapist in training, you will learn to implement the knowledge gained in your own practice. The assignments ensure that already during your studies you can integrate new insights into your therapeutic practice and apply them directly.
In the preliminary track, the test consists of a knowledge test and is a prerequisite for admission to the joint track. In the joint track, in addition to knowledge, the competencies developed by the students are tested.
Because pediatric pelvic physiotherapy deals with topics of an intimate nature, we feel it is important that as a pediatric pelvic physiotherapist-in-training you reflect on your own attitude toward these topics. It is only possible to discuss difficult subjects with another person if you know and can maintain your own boundaries. Intervision and reflection run like a thread through the curriculum.
Competency learning is part of the learning process of the child pelvic physiotherapist in training. Both in the preliminary course and in the joint course, internship days are important: in the preliminary course you follow one internship day with the other specialization, in the joint course you follow 2 days of internship with a pediatric pelvic physiotherapist (SOMT University of Physiotherapy trained).
