Other-line care

Physical therapy in the Netherlands is on the move. Physiotherapists are subjected to increasingly higher requirements regarding knowledge of basic medical sciences, interdisciplinary cooperation, communication, academic and scientific skills. We foresee an increasingly academic development in which intensified cooperation with health professionals within and between the first- and second-line health care (‘anderhalvelijns zorg’) will be decisive for providing effective, efficient and safe care to patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Future of physical therapy: new role for masters of physical therapy

In Anglo-Saxon countries there are already roles for Master physiotherapy with regard to referring for additional examination in the second line, limited prescription of medication, injecting, etc. The competencies necessary for this changing professional role cannot usually be acquired in the basic physical therapy training or additional (master) courses. SOMT University of Physiotherapy is of the opinion that physical therapy in The Netherlands can and should also grow to such an Extended Scope situation and wants to take the pioneering role in this.

Center of expertise on other-center care

SOMT University of Physiotherapy positions itself as an expert in the field of physical therapy in the Netherlands and has also developed a course Anderhalvelijnszorg: Gericht Verwijzen.
The course is offered annually in September. Find all information about the course in the continuing education calendar.

In order to be included in the quality register of extended scope care, these competencies must be acquired after the master’s program. Competencies acquired in this field prior to the master’s program do not count towards admission to this quality register (see NVES extended scope statutes).
